The distinction is important but often missed.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>user<\/strong> is someone who uses the software you make.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>customer<\/strong> is someone who <em>chooses<\/em> to give you money for your software.<\/p>\n<p>For many classes of software (eg a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_of_sale\">POS system<\/a>), <strong>the majority of legitimate software users are not customers<\/strong>.  They are using software chosen by someone else, often their employer, or an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Original_equipment_manufacturer\">OEM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first step to satisfying both users and customers is to not confuse them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Customers and users are not the same thing.
